ABC news: Many eager to tap into direct-sales

The Yahoo survey last year showed two-thirds of Americans were looking for a business of their own. ABC News reports that:

“Not long ago we featured a segment on starting a direct-sales business to make money from home. The response on the “Good Morning America” message boards and through e-mail proved that many of you were eager to tap into this opportunity, while others were already doing it and looking for ways to grow their businesses.” More here.

Direct sales (going after customers, especially repeat customers) is part of a healthy NM model. It’s not well known in old school NM circles where all fixation is on recruiting. But those who understand the customer gathering game (think AOL or cable TV) know it’s a great place to start earning repeat income.

The big question: How do you link up with those who are “eager to tap into this opportunity”?

What have you done that’s attracted folks like ABC describes? What has not worked?

  • Hi Ann–

Keep us posted on any responses.

So far it looks like the great majority of responses are people looking almost frantic to sell their mlm business. Lots of hype and promises. A regular feeding frenzy.
    Sigh.

I wouldn’t reply to such stuff if I were looking, but maybe others will.

    Am I being too jaded?

  • In my opinion it is about time that the media comes over to our side and shows our industry for what it really is.

A lot of Americans are just one paycheck away from bankruptcy. People are losing their jobs, they are losing their homes…foreclosures are at an all-time high. Our industry gives ordinary people a chance for a better future. It is about time that we get the spotlight….in a positive way.

  • Kim – I don’t think you are too jaded. The article was great and cast a positive light on Network Marketing. Then I started reading the 219 comments. How sad to see the “old schoolers” doing exactly what has given direct sales a bad name – yelling, screaming, promising. Made me ill.

  • Carol —

I’ve been checking into the ABC messages and they get worse by the minute. They sound desperate…I’d bet most of the screamers and promisers will themselves have quit their business in 60 days.

I guess they don’t see how silly they look, especially when one after the other is saying THEIR business is the best, and they are the income experts. Who would believe any of them with so many saying the same thing?

    Oi vey.

  • Kim – I understand that a great number of you ABC fans said you really would like a Home Based Business. I have been in one for a long time. We have average products no better or worse than anyone elses, but they have really helped me. I make a few bucks with the business. I am not really looking for reqruits but mostly for people who just want to use our products. So if your health is horrible and you think, like me, that any product is better than no product, give me a call and I will set up your order. Thanks.
(Is that the new school way?) I think it misses the mark! Wes

  • Hi Kim! I’m very glad that ABC did the article on Direct Sales. I was actually at the broadcast in DC for Good Morning America. It was a great networking opportunity. I do not want everyone to think that all Direct Sales companies are like what you are saying. I was never a fan of direct sales until I found the company I am with. I truly love it and really do make decent money…enough to stay at home with my daughter, which is all that matters to me.

    Thanks!
    Amber
