That’s a state of mind that a performer seeks before show time, a few final moments of calm before the tumult of an unpredictable live audience. So says stand up comic Jerry Seinfeld.
And, he says, getting into the right state of mind comes from staying practiced.
This is his attitude after a nine-year run with his weekly “Seinfeld” program – where he lived on the set and practiced his language and lines every day. Today, he earns some $50 million per year from the syndication of his original show. And he still performs live stand-up comedy.
He doesn’t rest on his past success. To be really really good, he says, he must practice – regular practice talking his spiel. Anyway, after “getting in the bubble” he went on stage and wowed them for an hour. The New York Times writes:
“The hourlong routine was a crucial opportunity for Mr. Seinfeld to practice his act at a time when he feels, as he often does, that he’s not performing enough. “No matter how many times you’ve done it in the past, it’s got to be polished or it goes away,” he had said backstage. “The act just packs up and starts walking away.” More here.
Jerry Seinfeld, who’s earned millions talking to people, feels the urge to practice his spiel “to stay polished or it goes away.”
Is your approach and follow up language working? If not, are you changing it so it does? And are you keeping it polished with practice?

EXCELLENT post, Kim! I’m sharing this one with my downline…thanks so much!

It is absolutely true that “practice makes perfect.” My spiel has gotten so much smoother and easier since I’ve been studying with you, Kim. I used to get customers kind of sporadically. Now I’m averaging 6 or more per month, every month. With this consistent growth, I know I will reach my goals much faster.
Thanks for all you do,
Michele

What a great post. Your state of mind is all important when dealing with the public. Some suggestions I offer here:
1. Have a mirror by your computer when making calls so you can always remember to smile. It’s also a great attitude check to make sure you are in the right frame of mind.
2. Take a breath and exhale before you pick up the phone for incoming calls.
3. If what you are doing is not working – change
4. Practice, Practice, Practice
Before I read ‘If my products so great”, I did use scripts of sorts, however I didn’t realise I was doing it. In my mainsteam job I educate people every day about looking after their bodies. When I treat backs and necks in particular, I do pull out the same speil over and over and over…… It’s tweaked as time goes and for the type of person I am speaking to of course. The conditions I treat the most, have had my spiel practiced the most and hence are the most confident and to perform….and most efective.
Formalising my script for my NM business has been invaluable and is still a work in progress. Thanks Kim, for pointing out the obvious!

I am a perfectionist and I have found myself polishing and tweaking, changing things and then polishing and tweaking them again before. It’s the “doing” that counts. When I just go out an “do it” then I am having success ;o)
I am getting better at the “just do it” part. And…it doesn’t really matter if I mess up. I probably will mess up again. But each time I’m getting better.
