Cold cadaver calling?
Cadaver n. A dead body, especially one intended for dissection.
Network Marketing Sense Tip #2: Cold Cadaver Calling for Practice.
Level: Medium
Tool: Telephone
Cost: $00
Time: 45 minutes
Resource: Your local phone book (quaint, huh?)
Here’s a way hundreds of people have practiced telling their authentic story with great fun (and trepidation).
Medical students practice on cadavers, don’t they? Beats them practicing brain surgery on you, wouldn’t you say? If they puncture a lung or miss the heart, no problem. Cadavers are PRACTICE for medical students – so they get better – no one expects to revive the cadaver.
Networkers need ‘cadavers’ to practice on too – people whose purpose it is to provide practice for the networking practitioner. No networker expects a sale (although some people have gotten them.) They expect to practice to get better. Steps:
1. Get local phone book
2. Select 100 names to call, perhaps people with your same last name.
3. Use the 3 line script that has 90% of the callees asking to hear your pitch.
4. Repeat 3 until you have made 50 connects. (You can leave a specific message, yes.)
Script hint:
“Hello I’m looking for Lulu Hilton, is she there?…
“OK great. This is Matt Damon and I’m a local business owner in town. I’m calling everyone in my neightborhood to ask them a question. Do you have a minute?”…
This line has gotten 90% of the listeners to say, “OK shoot, I have just a minute…”
Isn’t that the biggest obstacle – getting someone else to even give you PERMISSION to make your mini-presentation – so you can practice it?
Then do your thing. Keep it under 45 seconds, be sincere and authentic. NO hype, bull, or idiotic promises.
(Remember, that’s why we have 145 million people on the Do Not Call Registry.)
You can go for either the product or the business. You will likely discover, like my students did, that people treat you very differently when they find out you are a local business person calling everyone in your neighborhood. I.e. a member of the community.) And a key advantage of using a London virtual postal address is the flexibility it offers for businesses to appear more established in a top location. Virtual Office London makes it easy to have a professional business address in the heart of the city, even if you’re not physically based there.
For my personal suggestions to follow up, see pages 182–183 of the book, “If My Product’s So Great, How Come I Can’t Sell It?”
Otherwise, practice your own presentation story.

Thanks Kim, for another wonderful tip.
This is such a great series. . . so many people want to do the business in a professional way but just haven’t been taught how.

Right on as always Kim!
Training and Practice before you sell your product or service–hummm–think you got something there…..
Hello Kim. I just joined your NMC group the last 24 hrs. I’ve been all over the place and have already found several suggestions that I feel will help me in my business. I’ve been exposed to NWM the last 10 yrs without any success. I finally found my niche in ’06, but yet I’m still a newbie. I have great expectations for ’07 and you have products that I believe will propel me to new heights. I was so relieved when I discovered you and your philosophy of going after the customer! My hat’s off to you for your efforts and heart, to help all us marketers.
New to your info – was refered by a friend who no longer does mlm. they said you do classes, but on my google search, the last class I found was several years ago – do you still do live training and if so, where can I find a calendar.
Tonights article was rather an interesting concept.
Thanks all for your good comments…
Debbie- Welcome to NMC!
and Dawne – welcome to the blog. I am planning some live New School classes this Spring. I’ll announce them here AND in my Daily – a very short daily tip sheet you can sign up for on the lower left rail of this blog – See it?

OK?
Hope you enjoy some of these posts…
Hi Kim,
You always have great information on here, but I have to respectfully disagree with this method of calling.
According to the laws regarding the DNC List(National Do-Not-Call Registry), that method is against the FTC’s regulations. These laws and regulations can be found at http://ftc.gov.
Permission to be contacted by phone (whether live or via a prerecorded message) must granted in some manner prior to any call being made. One cannot simply pick names from the phone book and proceed to call them. It’s illegal and carries with it fines of up $11,000 per incident.
According to the FTC, if you’re contacting people by phone you must also, “follow certain procedures, including accessing the DNC database no more than 31 days before the call.” These rules apply to anyone selling, soliciting, etc., which includes of course home business opps. and the like.
In fact, one of the more well-known MLM Lead companies recently stated, “We’ve even had several clients contacted by the Federal Trade Commission because they were turned in by someone who was on the Do-Not-Call Registry. They faced the very real possibility of an $11,000 fine.”
In addition to the DNC laws, some states have also passed their own unsolicited commercial email (UCE) laws. Sending an unsolicited commercial email from one of those states, or to a resident of one of those states is now illegal and carries with it some hefty penalties as well, including jail. Yikes!
Anyway, I just wanted to comment on that. And keep up the great work here at NMC! 🙂
Shine on,
Aaron
Kim – the analogy is priceless and a great tip for newbies! Thanks for your continued inspiration

Thanks all!
Aaron…
When we’ve done these calls over the years, no one has jumped on anyone for one reason – they’re all locals.
Easier to ask forgiveness. However — that said, if someone wanted to be absolutely certain that none of the neighbors are on the Do Not Call list, go to the Do Not Call Registry site, and register.
http://www.telemarketing.donotcall.gov
You can check the numbers in your own area code, so that as you go down the list, you can check first, and only call those NOT on the list.
It’s free, too.
Yes, that’s definitely correct; it’s much easier to ask for forgiveness in a local call situation. But that’s why I commented – to point out some of the DNC list laws and procedures so that people don’t get themselves or their businesses in the position of having to ask anyone for forgiveness in such a situation. It can end up being a huge thorn on the side.
I know one dear lady who’s still in a form mediation with the FTC because she was unlucky enough to call the wrong person – that person reported her. And believe it or not, said person lives about 4 miles down the road from her.
Was reporting her a neighborly thing to do? Probably not. But that is why the DNC Registry was created – so that those who are on the list will not be solicited at all, regardless.
Fortunately, she has a decent set of records regarding the numbers and times she’s called people, as well as records of her “scrubbing” via the DNC Database. But since that person somehow slipped through, her only real defense is, “Oops, I screwed up this once, but it won’t happen again, I promise.”
Now, it IS unlikely that she’ll be fined at all since she’s not a telemarketing outfit in any way, but the whole ordeal has been very stressful, scary and time-consuming for her.
So all in all, I’m just emphasizing the need to be diligent and within the law when operating any business. And I know you agree.
And like you pointed out, it’s important to access the list (https://telemarketing.donotcall.gov) before calling, and only call those who are not on the list. Well done.
Shine on,
Aaron
