“Old School Scenario — 9 friends go out to dinner. One is an MLMer. During dinner, she hits up her friends to try the product. Everyone is uncomfortable, but perhaps polite.
New School Scenario— 9 friends out to dinner. One is an MLMer. She passes out samples to everyone. As she is passing out samples, she says, “I want make it clear . . . I’m not hitting you guys up to buy the product. I’m giving you samples so I can hit up ALL OF YOUR FRIENDS!!” Lots of giggles from the group. Lots of questions about the product so they can understand who they might better refer.
Perfectly natural. Lots of fun.
That second scenario, Kim, was from a distributor in my group who read your Manifesto. Great stuff!”

Kim,
You are so right, with my new company I don’t approach friends and family. I just ask them if they know any self employed, networking or small to medium business owner that could use my services.
I talk about the cards and how they helped my business. I give them some free cards to try and once I take them thru a brief 10 minute demo of how it works and all the cool features. They fall in love with it, all of sudden it’s “WOW, you can even use this thing for your personal cards, it is so cool”. Their not threatened and it’s amazing how many people they tell me that could use what I have.
I also found they experience the “Ah-ha factor – this could work for me”
I love the fact that I am no longer feeling like a shark with my friends.
It is nice to just be friends again.

I can just picture that setting. Great way to use the New School approach and the principles in “Friend, Lies and Network Marketing.” Thanks Walter and Kim.
It was a real “aha” moment for me when I heard Kim say that we should not approach friends and family directly – even though this goes against the grain of what most MLM companies teach. Now I say the same thing to all the people in my team to new distributors I enrol – and the look of relief on their faces is incredible! It’s so much easier and less-threatening for all parties to just ask “do you know anyone who might be interested…”
