The best actors come across as the real deal on screen; the bad ones look like they’re acting.
Here’s a way one perceptive acting professor showed aspiring actors the difference.
“At CalArts, the teacher asked for a volunteer to stand in front of the class at one end of the blackboard. She told him:
‘Now walk to the other end of the blackboard, and I want you to walk sneakily.’
The guy proceeded to do his best Hamburgler impersonation, projecting overt sneakiness broadly and clearly with his tiptoed steps and suspicious glances.
‘OK, the teacher continues, ‘now walk that same path again, but this time we will all be very quiet, and your goal is to cross the room without making a sound.’
We all hushed up and the aspiring actor set about silently crossing the room’s creaky wooden floor. The result was, of course, nothing like the ‘sneaky’ walk. He tested each step before putting weight on it, focusing intently on his task. It looked real because it was real. When directed to a specific result, the actor naturally began to act, to perform. But when given a clear task, he was allowed to simply be.” – The DV Rebel’s Guide, Stu Maschwitz
How about your inner director? What’s she telling you to do when you’re presenting your business or product? Is it “I want you to act and talk really health-consciously“? /…like a wellness consultant? Or is it “Your goal is to show people how you’re living in a more health conscious way today than before.“
You can compare your inner director’s instructions with anything you’re presenting – talk big about your business versus show people how they can earn income with your business…
Bad acting’s obvious and doesn’t sell anywhere. Us included. Think?

Thanks for the reminder, Kim , to listen to my Inner Director whom I call my Inner Guide. And I must know and examine my motive for that call, email, or whatever.
What am I trying to do?
But, I still sometimes forget to do this.
Soooo many good reminders.
Thanks again for all you do.

For me it’s neither. My Inner Director is telling me to be real. That is changeable depending on who I’m talking with. And when I am in the process of messing that up, she lets me know via really crummy emotions. I only feel better when I pay attention to those emotions, and change my approach.
My Inner Director wants me to see the person, and meet their needs if I can, not try and figure out how to *sell* them.
Be well,
Tracy
Wow, Kim. This is such great stuff. I am so glad that you have decided to share your vast knowledge about the industry with all of us in NM.
Thanks for all you do for us.

Hi Kim,
I think this post gets at the crux of the challenge that most people have with NM. I know for me, I was being told by upline to “say it this way” and was constantly critiqued for how I sounded. I felt like I was not myself and my prospects knew it. I was the quintessential bad network marketer.
UNTIL…I went against what upline was training me and just followed my heart. It was only when I spoke from my heart, and didn’t follow the script my company was training, that not only did I have way more success, but I had so much more FUN with my business! While there is value in teaching a “system that anyone can follow” – there is danger in losing good people who can’t make the company way authentic to them.
It was when I followed my heart and my own instincts with relating to people, where they knew I was genuine in my intent, that the response was amazing.
This particular story of the actor is so profound – and lies at the heart of what I tell every new distributor. Find your passion – and what resonates with you. It’s your business after all – not your uplines.
Kudos, Kim!

I’m reminded of the movie Face Off with Nicolas Cage and John Travolta. These 2 guys did a great job playing each other. Take into account they intensely studied each other, spent months together, played each other in front of the other’s friends and families and had the benefit of Hollywood special effects and editing. On top of all that, these 2 are very talented elite actors. The average person doesn’t have quite those resources at his disposal. But, when someone comes along and does very well with their script, we all think it’s the magic bullet. All we have to do is say what she says and we’ll be rich. Wishful thinking. There may be some great material in that script and there may some great words and phrases that produce favorable responses and minimize objections. But, if that script or even those key words and phrases are not part of your natural daily language, you’re going to come across as just another peddler in the marketplace.
Take that persons script and break it down. Read it aloud to someone who knows you and ask them to point out words that don’t sound like you. Record your reading and listen to it. Does it sound like you? Write down all those words you and your friend picked out as unnatural. Grab a thesaurus and find words from your vocabulary that mean the same thing. Are there things in there you don’t believe, haven’t experienced or just plain don’t like? Take them out. Pour your personality into the script. Be you. It may end up sounding almost identical to the original, it may be something completely different. It doesn’t matter because it will be you and it will be authentic.
If you wear another man’s custom tailored suit, you’re going to end up looking like your wearing another man’s custom tailored suit.
You statement “talk big about your business versus show people how they can earn income with your business…”. We should always remember this. People don’t want to know how well you are doing except that you are successful so they can gauge if you can help them be successful.
