Here’s from reader Matthew Adams today…
“Kim – Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us.
I have been test marketing an idea for my team with Max International.
We have been wearing a yellow button that says, ‘Guess What I Do?’Our answer is our First Date Script.
It has been working wonderfully. It gets the ball rolling and the conversation started. Nobody’s eyes glazed over. They are interested in the information that we have to share (minus the technobabble…of course).
So far, when we are doing errands, we get asked an average of 12 to 13 times per day…” Matthew Adams

The ‘First Date Script’ Matthew refers to is in the customer niche program – here – a customer book and CD program to help you. And here’s help for talking in a human voice about your business opportunity – a business opportunity CD set and cribsheet .

We used to buy these little bright yellow buttons that said I LOVE (BIG red heart) MY JOB and people stopped me everywhere I went. They would always ask how that is possible. And of course, I would be obliged to tell them how. I shared my where-I-was-before-my-biz story running a company working 60-80 hours a week sacrificing my health and life for the company until the owner decided to close the company and where-I-am-now story regaining my health and my life by working at home in my pajamas talking on the phone and working on the computer and traveling the world. I got a lot of great customers and distributors that way. I lost my button and the supplier never returned my emails so I forgot all about it.
I found a great source for buttons, stickers, etc. that caters to network marketers so I am having them design me a button that says “I’m losing inches now – ask me how!” I’m also getting some of their I Love What I Do type buttons and I’ll market test them by wearing them both and see which gets the most attention. 🙂 I’ll let you know what happens.

Matthew,
What a great idea just to break the ice! I’m going to try that next time I am out doing errands. What could be better than to work in the perfect mom business and advertise with my kids in tow.
Thanks for the idea,

Okay, you are asked 12 – 13 times a day.
How many have purchased?
I like this idea. I know when I’ve worn similar items (either on my own, or something company provided) I get more people asking me questions. This is getting me thinking, that as I am in different places in the Summer (concerts, playparks with kids, county fairs, etc.) I will be standing in line with or next to new potential bsns builders and customers.
Sometimes its hard starting a conversation because you “hope” it leads you into talking about your business. With this button, they talk to you. So whose leading now? But with the answer you give… you are still in control of the conversation.
I look forward to hearing of your successes… and am now inspired to make a similar button of my own.
Thanks so much!!!
Kathy

I’m curious as to how many of the 12 to 13 each day express an interest in learning more versus just asking out of curiosity.
So far…everyone who asks what I do wants more information for either themselves or someone they know.
As far as sales…we just started this program and ironing out the bugs. We will be carrying some boxes with us…possibly samples for them to try.
The big difference so far is that Michelle and I are talking to more and more people in a shorter amount of time.
Gotta admit though…sometimes they catch you off guard and you end up saying, “excuse me?” (a duh moment).

Great idea Matthew !
Looking forward to trying your button.
John
The majority of people you meet
the first time wont purchase but
its great warming people up for
a possible friendship and being
business partners, plus if they
are not interested, they will
probably send referrals your way!
I say BRAVO folks!
Super idea! Thanks for reminding me. We used to have a button in my old company that said “ask me for a plan to get out of debt.” It worked. Got appointments right there on the spot since I couldn’t posibly explain it right then 🙂 I’m going to order some and do it all over again.
Thanks again,
Michael

I think Matthew’s idea is a very good one for people who are out and about alot.
But for someone like myself who practically lives online, I have recently started using a slightly different approach to get people’s attention. And it actually serves 2 purposes:
One: it’s letting people know about the most stunning business card designs I have ever come across (including some for direct and network marketing companies), and
Two: it shows people the eye-catching business card that I designed for my network marketing product.
I’ve only known about this website and its promotional materials for about a week, but as a result of sending out an email about it to members of my team in another affiliate program, I received a phone call yesterday from someone I didn’t know.
Apparently this person was part of my team almost 2 years ago, but not personally sponsored by me, and wants to rejoin. (His sponsor was my cousin, whom I haven’t even seen in 30 years, and my cousin is no longer in the business).
Anyway, the most important part of our 45 minute conversation was the fact that it was my business card that caught his attention and prompted him to call. So we talked about the business he wants to rejoin, the business card itself, and then the product being promoted by the card!
That one call tells me that once I receive these silky feeling, tear and water-resistant business cards, I’ll be making much more of an effort to get out and about just so I can hand them out and leave them wherever I happen to go. 🙂
