I’m not aggressive with strangers. Can I do this?

shy

“I’m not one of those bubbly people people,” Lulu told me. She went on,

“One of my upline, a pretty successful old-timer in the business, tells his people, ‘I’ve never met a stranger. I always strike up a conversation with anyone I see, and soon I find out a problem they have. Then I tell them, ‘Oh I have something that will help you,’ “…

“I am not like that with strangers,” said Lulu. “What can I do to become more of a people-person like him so I can be successful, too?”

What would you tell Lulu if she were your new baby?

  • Baby steps . . .

Start by saying hello to 10 people.

For the next 10 people, say hello, and then ask them a really simple question, “What do you think about the weather?”

For the next 10 people, ask a simple question, and then try to have some follow-up questions after their answer. “Oh, do you visit here often?”

For the next 10, ask them what they do for a living.

After that, ask the next 10 if they like what they do.

Then ask the next 10 if they’d like to look at something where they could make extra money.

If you ease into it, it’s not so hard.

My wife is very good at casually talking to people like this.

Yesterday, she was a the dentist. The dental tech asked her if she had the day off. My wife said, “No. I work at home, so I can set my own hours.”

Guess who’s taking a look at the opportunity? 🙂

  • P.S.

Mark Yarnell says (and I believe him), “Rich Networkers are good at adaptive dialog.”

This is a skill that all network marketers should work on improving.

  • I would tell my new “baby” that they aren’t expected to be like everyone else.

Many people will be attracted to their quiet and calming nature. Not everyone is attracted to “bubbly”.

I would reassure them that we will train them and work with them until they are comfortable enough to work more independently.

I would assure them that we work as a team and they will have plenty of help.

  • Our first caution would be to ask ourself if we have an agenda or not. Are we out to GET a customer etc.? Using manipulative agenda related tools like FORM will tend to be that way.

It is important to know that we are in the People Business therefore that requires People Skills that will eventually develop quality relationships and give us a chance to add value and make someone’s life better…(like ours now is “better now because”)…..

I read a book a few years ago entitled “Contact The First Four Minutes” What happens then determines the quality of what happens next. e.g. even being in bed with your lover. …it doesn’t just apply to strangers.

“BETTER” The question that comes up everyday and throughout the day for all of us is “How are you?” Most will say I’m OK and that becomes the end of the conversation if you allow it. Then the comeback and your chance. …and How are you?

My response is “BETTER”…The other person will say, oh, I didn’t know you were sick…..You just say oh, no…..I’m better because I’ve started my new business from home or now that I am marketing a product for people who etc….

You get to tell your story all day long and have endless business opportunities. That is if you TTP TTP, TTP “talk to people”

Our chance will come just doing what is natural, have no agenda, be patient and develop and build relationships with the BIG 3 BUILDERS…. 1. Empathy, 2. Being Genuine, 3. Caring..…in that order of importance …They are all feminine traits…

If you must speak, ask questions. and being a good listener is a good place to start……Relationship building, like making a sale is a process and can happen “just like that”.

Being “aggressive” is a form of Control and along with Self-Righteousness destroys relationships. BTW….They are both masculine traits.

PS. ***Note: Both men and women have masculine and feminine traits…..however they do favor their own sex.

  • My newbie and I would sit down and figure out what his/her strengths and weaknesses are. With that information, I can talk to him about different reaching out methods that play to his strengths. Telling Louie that he has to “get over it” and push him into working in his weak areas is a fast track to failure. First, get Louie some confidence by teaching him ways to find customers that use his strengths. He will probably enjoy doing these. If he enjoys doing it, he’ll do it better and be more effective.

No athlete plays his weak game when trying yo win, no Networker should either.

  • Walter’s instructions (the first posted reply) sounds like something that might really be helpful for someone like me, who doesn’t usually talk to people much, and can’t move the conversation over to business even if I do.

Thanks, Walter. It’s the first time anyone ever has addressed that in any kind of realistic way.

  • I think all of the above are great ideas. Here is what I do with people like Lulu.

“Lulu, there are many ways to reach out and touch someone. There are many ways to turn strangers into friends and unfortunately, while the company training manual mentions it, it is really an undeveloped part of our system.

“So here is what I would like you to do. As part of our personal new rep kit, you will find a book called The Truth. You will also find some supplemental material on reaching out that is proprietary to our group (i.e. no one else in the company is doing it) but works very well for some folks.

“Your first assignment after class tonight is to read through the Truth book and the supplemental materials, and when you come back to the next class have 3-5 reach out methods that you would like to use to build your business, either clients, recruits, or preferably both.

“Some of the methods in the Truth book we may have to tweak somewhat based on today’s market or because of compliance issues. But it will give you a good foundation for what you need to know to get started.

“Some of those methods allow you to reach out without having to have a bubbly Icantalktoanybodyattitude. But I will let you decide what is best for you based on your desire, time and budget.

“You may also decide to use the primary company approach which is using tools to reach out to your warm market. If that is something you want to do, it is a very powerful method provided you do it properly, nor does it involve personally presenting anything to anybody you know.

“Understand however that despite the emphasis, it is not the only way (although the company will make it seem like it is *the* way) and depending on your situation it may not be the best way. I will leave that for you to decide. Whatever you choose I will be here to train you and help you get started.

“Over time, is you have any success, you will find that even talking to strangers will get easier because of the confidence and conviction your success engenders.”

  • I know that this MAY sound a bit nuts…bu I had a button made. Yellow with black letters that says, “Guess What I Do?” (Hey Herbalife was a HUGE success with, “Lose Weight Now Ask Me How”).

An amazing thing happened…people started asking what I did…on a regular basis. I gave them my First Date Script.

I will post the details after a week or two of testing (I am getting referrals BTW)
