I just got this fabulous book The Omnivore’s Dilemma – it’s must read for anyone who knows nutrition’s important, err, key to continued health. Here’s a bit from it…
“Al Nye points us to The Omnivore’s Dilemma, which contains this tasty bite:
…perhaps the most alarming ingredient in a Chicken McNugget is tertiary butylhydroquinone, or TBHQ, an antioxidant derived from petroleum that is either sprayed directly on the nugget or the inside of the box it comes in to “help preserve freshness.” According to A Consumer’s Dictionary of Food Additives, TBHQ is a form of butane (i.e. lighter fluid) the FDA allows processors to use sparingly in our food: It can comprise no more than 0.02 percent of the oil in a nugget. Which is probably just as well, considering that ingesting a single gram of TBHQ can cause “nausea, vomiting, ringing in the ears, delirium, a sense of suffocation, and collapse.”
The book also points out that a Chicken McNugget is 56% corn.”
Thanks, Doc.

Oh my!
I am totally stunned. Unbelievable.
When people who eat at McDonald’s are eating lighter fluid, how can people still deny the direct link between disease and nutrition.
If you put poor quality gasoline in your car, wouldn’t you expect that to have an impact on its performance? The human body’s the same way: Put the right fuel in to get maximum performance.
I don’t eat at McDonald’s anyways, Thank God.
Cheers,
Rani
Nothing surprises me anymore – not when the government “allows” a certain level of toxic substances in our food, skin care, vitamins and who-knows-what-else. And did you know that there is a defined amount of rodent hair, bugs and other interesting things in our food – as long as the amount does not exceed that “allowable” limit…
On one of my blogs I’ve posted about toxic skin care, MSG, synthetic vitamins and other “bad” products we are “allowed “ by law to put in and on our bodies.
As one who is trained in Human Development, I have found over the years that many of these “allowable” toxins have created developmental problems – in our children, our teens, our adults and now we will be adding our elderly populations.
Is it any wonder there is an increase in so many diseases – including obesity, autism, developmental disabilities, etc?
Until many more people realize the dangers of all these “allowable” substances and stop believing those who say “The government would not allow it if it were bad” we will continuing ingesting things like TBHQ.

I almost never eat at McDonald’s anymore, or any fast food chain for that matter, though I used to every day. This is a great article and very timely for me as in less than a month I will be a father. No way my child is going to feast on lighter fluid or anything else at Fast Food restaurants.
Just for a little humor in a serious matter, next time you come across a box from a Big Mac, take a look on the bottom. It says, and I quote, “Made from 65% Post Consumer Product”, yet it does NOT specify if that pertains to the BOX or the SANDWICH. 🙂 Just a little food for thought. (Note: I could be wrong on the percentage as I haven’t eaten a big mac in over 10 years.)
I knew there was a reason other than taste that we taught our kids to prefer “Mc Braums”.
Yes, we went to McDonald’s some, but many times we asked “How about McBraums”?

The amazing part is that is it perfectly acceptable to the masses to eat at these types of places and that our agencies allow this type of thing to go on, then they turn around and pick apart products that are made from healthy ingredients and scrutinize them so rigidly. The FDA doesn’t always have our best interests at heart. This may be my opinion, but it is an observation. It is okay for drugs to have side effects so long as it is published, but if you sell any type of nutritional supplements, watch out for the FDA.
Watch what eating nothing but McFood for 30 days did to a healthy person. That’s what Morgan Spurlock did in his fast food documentary called
And once you know what conventionally grown food goes through, you might be inclined to switch to
organic foods,
like I did.
