"On Being Named Person of the Year"

“The Person of the Year is me. Of course the person of the year is also you. Actually the person of the year is “You,” as in YouTube and MySpace, as in the World Wide Web.

“I’m proud of us. But like all people who stand before you holding a trophy, I feel compelled to say that I can’t help thinking a mistake has been made, and unlike most of the people who utter those bromidic words, I actually believe them…”

As you will see, media too, is wrestling with the old school-new school clashes, and they are mighty indeed, affecting most of the reading and listening world.

  • Excellent post Kim..

I liked what you said about the media and am glad I have no media involvement as can you imagine the stress as to “what to print” vs “what not to print” ? What to say vs what not to say?
It only takes one story to make a break a newspaper or a media career.

Meanwhile, I too wish to Congratulate all of YOU for being the “person of the year.”

    YOU deserve it all!

    Sincerely,

  • Newspapers should be concerned. This Fall, a circulation data report showed large declines in major metro markets, including mine.

Why has this happened? Because as you noted, Kim, the newspapers have stuck with old school kind of mentality and advertising.

I still get my local paper delivered but I am tempted each month to drop my subscription as I already know the headlines before I go to bed and I can get all the local news on the internet, including the paper’s own online version.

Our paper has neighborhood bloggers, including me, so they are trying some new school ideas in media – but they seem never quite sure what to do with the blogs other than having us post them.

And as long as newspapers are all owned by large conglomerates and stuck with what I call vanilla reporting – they will not be anyone’s “person” of the year – that takes innovation and innovation takes people like you and us.

So here’s to all of “us” – we deserve to be Times person of the year… Congrats!!
