Shall we dump "I’m so excited"?

This may be a hard one to swallow…

How many pitches have you heard (or made) that begin with:

salesman3
“I’ve gotten into this new business and I’m so excited about it, and the company is on track to be the next Microsoft…(and you wouldn’t want to miss that, would you?) Can we meet/could you watch this amazing DVD, etc.”

Pause.

How much do you, listener with a life, really care that the caller is excited?

I mean, how does that help you have a better day?

No and it wasn’t Tom Cruise calling.

Moments later they try sell it to you and now the game’s up, isn’t it? Another wasted few moments on the phone with someone trying to sell you something you didn’t ask for.

I suggest dumping the “I’m so excited about” cliche when introducing your business or product. It’s a dead giveaway that you’re selling.

Plus no one cares how we feel. We’re selling it, after all.

  • Yes! Can we please also dump the word “awesome”?

And while we are at it, can we stop asking the prospect what part of a horrible two hour white board presentation “excited them the most”?

  • I paused to read this post ’cause I DO use “I’m so excited” and quite a bit.

Turns out it’s in a different contest though. And comes at a different moment in time.

After my new customer’s first purchase, I generally am sincerely excited for them! And I don’t hesitate to tell them so.

They’ve shared what they want, they’ve sold themselves and have determined that what they’ve purchased will help them reach those goals.

“I’m so excited” isn’t taboo … it’s when we use it in a way that’s all about us and ignores the “WIIFT” (what’s in it for them) factor that we’ve gone astray.

Apparently often in the very first sentence out of our mouths 😉

    Always appreciate you Kim!

  • Another word I’d like to see dropped is “explode” as in “your business is going to “explode!!!” or “the business is going to explode in September!!!”
