"This opportunity is bigger than Google" and other recruiting nonsense…

Some recent spam email I got…

ridiculous “Please do not ignore this message. This opportunity is bigger than Google.”

“Did you miss Microsoft? Don’t miss this!”

“You MUST see this!”

From the emailer’s point of view this may all be true. From the recipient’s point of view, it’s just another person with no visible credibility, blowing lots of hot air.

How would they (or anyone else) know if something “is bigger than Google”? Or if it’s the next Microsoft? What do they have to back up such statements other than more hot air or repeating what they heard from someone else with equally little credibility?

And really, why should your deal be a “MUST-SEE” for me, someone you don’t even know?

A seller’s urgency is never the buyer’s. The more desperate the claims a seller makes are, the more ridiculous they look to someone with a brain.

You don’t write emails like that, do you?

  • Reminds me of what my dad used to say when some driver on the road was in a bigger hurry than he was: “Your lack of planning does not constitute my emergency.”

In this case, it’s even more rediculous, because to me as a prospect the more fake pressure a seller tries to create the faster I back away!

Before completing any kind of ad copy, ask yourself, “Is this something I would respond to? Or does it sound like hype & empty promises?” That’s hard to do sometimes, but the people around us can sometimes help with that.

Motive also plays a big part. What part of “This opportunity is bigger than Google!” is asking me if I’m even looking for an opportunity?

    Thanks Kim!!! 😉
