First, thanks to each of you for playing. Some of you entered lots of times. This was the best way I knew to have you really practice writing ad copy. Have you discovered it is NOT easy?
There’s a reason the advertising business is a billion dollar industry. It’s very difficult to write ad copy that attracts the right people – for whatever is being promoted.
For this contest, the rule was to describe yourself to the point where you would exclude most of the mismatches, without insulting anyone, and without expressly excluding anyone (e.g. not actually saying words like “not for people who…” or “so and so stay away” etc.).
The ad models to base your ads on, offered in the previous posts were:
1. “Svedka says ‘thank you’ for making the gay man’s fashion gene available over the counter in 2033.”
(Commentary by the writers, “Svedka knows who it wants to date: irreverent urban party people who are out until 3 a.m. three times a week. If that’s not you, Svedka doesn’t care. Its attitude helped it fetch $384 million from Constellation Brands this February.”)
2. “Athletic math nerd seeks someone to hum Seinfeld intro music with.”
(3. Optional throw in from Match.com: “I might bite!”)
This doesn’t mean this is the only ad format that works. But it is one that DOES work. So the idea was to see who could come up with something that precisely described themselves, not the prospect, just like these ads do. Nothing more.
Precisely describing yourself automatically excludes mismatches.
Winner (who can choose any one of the MP3 programs in our store. Go here to choose your prize. At the top of that page, you will see two MP3 links to pages full of stuff: “New School MP3” programs and general “MP3s” here). Choose the MP3 program you want. Any one you want.
#1. Robin Plan (her last revised entry- below):
Healthy pet nut seeks a pet professional to market dog and cat food in the Twin Cities area. Ideal candidate must be involved with pets daily. Must be knowledgeable about pet food and know the benefits of a natural human quality pet food.
robin@healthypetnut.com
Follows the format of the model and I suspect, will get her a right person. Robin, congratulations! Now, RUN THIS AD and tell us the results. Try the local newspaper ok? They usually have an online version, so if that’s more affordable, do that. But preferably, both the online AND paper version, for a SUNDAY or else 10 days (whatever time span they offer where you get a good deal.) Also consider animal lover papers, vet publications and such.
Tell me what MP3 program you’d like from those order pages, and why you chose it, and I’ll get it to you, OK?
Other winner (couldn’t resist)…
Runner-up: Virgina Wright
“Recycling Grandma earning free green products is looking for a business partner.”
Follows the model above, doesn’t it? And it’s short, to the point, and describes who she is quite well and excludes those who don’t recycle or care about green products.
Virginia: Congratulations to you! Any green publication might be a good place to run this, or as an Orange Ad on the blog or NMC. Go to the order page link above for Robin, and select any item there up to $50. On those MP3 pages, ok?
Honorable mentions
1. Karen O’Handley (last and 7th? submission)
My body needed help
I noticed that the older I got the harder it became to stay healthy. Plus my joints got stiff, swollen & achy. Then I found some products that helped me get healthier & stronger, finally. Now my back, hips, knees & fingers don’t hurt as much. I take these supplements everyday because they help me feel better. Do you know anyone who’d like to know about products like that? Contact Me
And also, two ads that work although their format is not exactly that of the model, but it works because each is so precise in describing whom they seek in the header:
2. Erin (3rd submission?)
Discerning buyers.
High quality, earth friendly
products. Certified Organic
to the highest international
food standards. Skin, hair, body,
cosmetic, nutritional and
household cleaning products.

Thanks for participating. Ads are not easy. But they can be written to attract right ones if you focus on the task without multitasking or without giving up after 2 tries.

Congrats to Robin and the other winners! Great job!
I read everyone’s submission and while I worked on modifying mine to resubmit, I was one of the ones who couldn’t “focus on the task without multitasking” and ultimately, “gave up”. 🙁
You’re absolutely right, Kim . . . this was NOT an easy task. But certainly a challenge to continue working on.
Thanks for making us really think.

Thanks so much, Kim, for recognizing my efforts. Hope you don’t mind that I left so many entries…LOL! I felt the urge to keep refining what I wrote until it was closer to what you expected from us.
I learned a lot, so thanks for the challenge! Karen
Congratulations to all! I learned a lot just by reading other ads.
