How do you get people to listen to you when you want to bring up your business?
Ryan Holiday brings us some wonderful tips from Cicero, probably the greatest speaker that ever lived. Some highlights…
“Cicero is believed to be the greatest speaker that ever lived. So eloquent that Caesar–often the victim of the man’s words and redresses–considered Cicero‘s achievements to be greater than his own; once remarking that it was nobler to ‘extend the frontiers of the mind’ than it was to extend the ‘boundaries of the empire.'”
1. Master the Subject: All of It
There is no way around this. He writes that unless a speaker truly “grasps and understands what he is talking about, his speech will be worthless.”…2. Understand Human Nature
It’s very easy to think that knowledge of the details of the discussion at hand is enough. They are not. Cicero wrote that the speaker will never find the right words without a “thorough understanding of human nature and psychology.”…3. Focus on What Matters: Be Concrete
Without concreteness we have audible masturbation–onanism. What we need is someone who combines theory with practicality and a laser-focus on the stuff that matters…5. Enthusiasm: Passion
The only way to navigate the difficulties of the other obstacles is to actually love what you do. That means, you’d do it for free or if no one was reading. He said “You need just one thing: enthusiasm–a passion little short of love.” If you don’t have that, why bother? People certainly aren’t going to want to read what you could barely drag yourself to write…Just as Sun Tzu said that if you know yourself and the enemy you will win every time, if you know the material and people you will do the same.” See Ryan Holiday’s entire post here.
Notice #5. If you’re doing NM mostly for the extra income instead of #5, chances are pretty good you won’t come across remarkably enough for others to notice enough to buy.

Kim,
Passion is a active ingredient in the chemistry of conviction.
Without it your words have no substance and just fall to the floor like tissue. And like tissue, people can see right through them. With passion, people are drawn to you like a moth to the light.
Celine Dion is one of my favorite vocalists. Everytime I see her in concert her passion for what she does electrifies me. Passion is not limited to the performing arts; it flourishes in people of conviction in all fields.
I love passion,

1) Waiting until the right time for your prospect. Sometimes you must let them figure it out for themselves in their own time.
2) Passion… believing in what you do and what you have to offer people goes a long way. You must believe first!!

One has to love what they do. If their passion is in football, music, gardening, animals, etc., then they should do their business based on that. Why? Because there’s no such thing as “stress” because no one even thinks about it. If you’re in the business of doing what you don’t want to do, then you’ll be stressed out and yes, you may want to find a way out of it.
No passion for what you do means more stress. It doesn’t mean a thing if you’re doing it for the money or not, but if you don’t like what you do, then stress will come into the equation, somewhere.
In this type of business, the key thing is to use the passion you have to help other people make their lives better when that time comes. Most of the time, your prospect may not need it, even though a similar passion between you and that prospect, but that doesn’t mean it ends there. They might just be the gateway to a gold mine, so you never know.
So Item #5, passion, is important.
