Attracting women: modesty or ‘this is exploding’?

In line with the previous Should Hillary Pretend to Be a Flight Attendant? post, a gal who markets a nutritional product writes in just now:

“Hi Kim: A medical technologist ordered my product from me the other day. She found me this morning and said:

“You know I really appreciate your ‘modesty’ in regards to your side venture (product and co). That’s one of the reasons I sought you out after I read the newspaper. I…thought I could trust you. I just wanted you to know that.”

“Kim, that made my day. It’s hard to resist getting on a loud speaker sometimes to announce the benefits of whole food multi’s. And people do know I’m a health nut…”

Here’s the question:

Ladies only please: When someone approaches you with the business or product, which do you prefer? A low key, more modest approach? Or a “this thing is exploding” approach?

Results so far here.

  • I didn’t vote in this one because I don’t prefer either.

I’d rather have someone just be themselves and talk to me like a real person. If they are excited and it shows, no problem. However, if they are hyping me I sense it.

I’ve had people read my myspace page or my blog and tell me that they felt they could relate to me and ended up joining my business.

Do I get passionate and/or excited and/or upset occasionally – YES. That’s called being human and people can relate to that. At least the ones that I’m looking for can. 🙂

  • This post and survey makes me chuckle because a similar situation just happened to me.

I recently joined a new company, and my sponsor is a man I’ve known for several years with my other company. As he was trying to recruit me, he continually used the terms ‘this is exploding’ and ‘we’re all gonna make BIG money with this’..yadda yadda. Of course none of that had any effect on me. I looked at the science and research behind the products and did my due diligence before making a decision to join.

But just yesterday I wrote him to ask if some people we mutually know are in this new biz yet, and he wrote back ‘Not yet. ATTACK!!!’
Again I chuckled. Was this supposed to encourage me to contact them? How little he knows me, eh?

I’ll be sending him Kim’s manifesto so he’ll be aware that I’ll be conducting my biz VERY differently. I must remain true to myself and respectful of others, even if it takes longer to build my new business. Karen

  • I’m curious why this poll is for women only.

I am a VERY low key marketer and I will NEVER go on and on about how much money I am making; how much we are ALL gonna make or anything like that.

    Yuck!

I ask about the women only thing because my husband was totally turned off of network marketing about 10 years ago because of the hype and chest beating, mostly at conventions and meetings.

And, while he loves and respects what I do, and I now make over three times his salary, I don’t know that he will ever join me in the business building aspect of MLM again.

He is an airline pilot and likes to go to the local coffee shop wherever his layover is and have coffee and read the paper in the mornings.

He will call me pretty regularly to tell me about the conversation he is over hearing at a table nearby with an overzealous network marketer pitching some poor soul!

He knows the entire lingo, body language, etc and it is still such a major turn off to him.

So, I know he would be interested in your poll!

It’s certainly food for thought for all of us.

When he calls me to report in, I always wonder how many others at the coffee shop are listening in, rolling their eyes and also being turned off!

    EXPECT Success!

  • Karen – too funny. Point made.

Jackie: For women only because 82% of us in NM are women, and it seems that the “This thing is exploding/Next billion dollar company!!!” sort of rhetoric is what the recruiters use, even some women, often against their better judgment.

If the recruiters reading this see that most women PREFER a more modest approach, perhaps they’ll take note and tone down the wild rhetoric.

If the women who’ve said these kinds of hypey things realize other women prefer something more low key they might feel more validated in using their own lower key approach, especially when approaching other women.

I am sure there are men who also prefer the lower key approach, but obviously, some do not.

Since we’re 82% women in the business, I wanted to focus on them/us first.

  • Having been in Network Marketing now for some 37 years I still find the lower key approach where the practice is: People don’t care what you know until they know that you care. Works best for me. The building can be slower but the quality and staying power is better. Just my 2 cents!

  • I’ve never liked the “this thing’s exploding” style. I like the gentle approach or being modest.

My sponsor with my very first company was the kind that would get on a loud speaker about the business. Never about the product. She still trys that style and after 12 years is still trying to find her first ace and make some real money. I feel sorry for her because she’s a really nice lady and with different training I feel she could do so much better.

    Happy Thanksgiving
    Robin
