Donna Part II: Does the ‘Secret’ movie cause do-nothingness?

Below is Part II of my interview with Donna Johnson, #1 earner at Arbonne Int’l.

She discusses details of how the party plan works – how to invite, how to get ready for the guests and the no-shows, and what to do at the get-together.

She also brings up two other touchy subjects: 1) the trophy-generation young people, many of whom have been given the impression that everyone is always a winner and 2) the Secret DVD which, she notes, is focused on the powers of the ‘Law of Attraction’.

However, she stated, for many of her people, watching the Secret has resulted in do-nothing behavior. Those who watch it often do nothing after – they sit and wait, it seems, for the law of attraction to do the work for them.

I have only seen the trailer so I can’t comment. But for those of you who HAVE seen the Secret, is that an impression some people might come away with? That the ‘law’ will do the work for you? And if so, is that a good thing?

  • You can come away from The Secret with the wrong impression unless you realize that the law of attraction is one concept in the larger study of quantum mechanics.

    There’s a more detailed book/movie on the subject, but it’s not quite the commercial and viral success that The Secret is.

    It’s called What The (Bleep) Do We Know, and Marlee Matlin is in the movie.

  • I have seen The Secret — twice — and absolutely did not get the message that it invites a do nothing attitude. In fact, if you watch and listen closely, there’s a statement made that our activity and actions — not just our thoughts — that bring things to us.

    Must admit, I did watch Oprah when The Secret “cast” introduced the film and again when did a follow up after viewers had a chance to watch it. The motives and intentions of the film were discussed at length on her show. It made me go back and watch it again — the message was very clear the second time around.

    I found it to be uplifting and inspiring. It’s my belief that those who do “do” and those who don’t “don’t”. You can find validation for your point of view depending on how you choose to rationalize the material.

    That being said, I’m definitely a devotee of K2!!

  • I would tend to agree. The “Why work when you can just “believe” everything will be handed to you.” is very prevalent in todays society.

    I have seen the video, interesting. For a bit I was caught up in the excitement of it all. I even had my wife (Michelle) and my 3 kids watch it…hmmmm.

    My kids saw right through it. Not only did it offend our personal beliefs (couldn’t believe I missed that one) but our work ethic beliefs. Michelle and I have taught our kids to work toward what they believed in.

    My son (Steven-15) asked me if instead of studying he could sit back and “believe” he was going to ace the test…hmmm.

    He made his point.

  • It is inevitable that when an idea begins to spread quickly it will not always be understood. The Secret promotes “feeling good” to activate the Law of Atraction.

    In the movie Bob Doyle says, “It could be you wake up and it’s just there. It’s manifested. Or, you might get some inspired idea of some action to take.”

    Most of the time it will be the latter. Action will be required but it will “feel good”, not like hard work. Others may be looking at you and thinking that you are working hard, but to you it won’t feel that way.

    Kim, you need to watch The Secret and tell us what you think!

  • Hi Kim,

    Interesting! I’ve watched The Secret 3 times, and it inspires me ‘to do’ – rather than ‘not to do’. It’s basically the same thing that others have written about before, dressed in new clothes. Same kinds of ideas as in Think and Grow Rich (Napoleon Hill); Reflections on a Philosophy (Dr. Shaklee); Excuse Me – Your Life is Waiting (Lynn Grabhorn)… and others. What’s different about The Secret is that it uses the powerful medium of video.

    I believe if one really understands what the message is, it’s going to promote some introspection, personal growth, and help some to grow their business. For example, it addresses, among other things, this idea that holds some people back that somehow, money or the pursuit of it, is somehow evil. That abundance is somehow evil. That’s an idea that seems to be so ingrained in some people’s sense of identity, that they don’t even realize it’s there and holding them back.

    Just my thoughts….what about others? I’d love to hear from some of you.

  • It’s been a few months since I first watched The Secret, so forgive me if I can’t remember who said what exactly…

    I did not come away with the thought (and I don’t think anyone who’s paying attention would either) that the Law of Attraction would do the work for me. The “Teachers” – Joe Vitale, Jack Canfield, Michael Beckwith, Lisa Nichols, James Arthur Ray – all say that you have to act on your beliefs and desires to make them come true.

    On Oprah, James Arthur Ray said this:

    “A lot of people watch The Secret and they say, ‘Well, I’m sitting around visualizing my millions coming into my lap.’ Well, they’ll come take your furniture away. And then how are you going to visualize [when you’re living] on the curb?”

    “You’ve got to act on it. Make decisions on where you’re going versus where you have been.”

    This was said over and over during The Secret.

    If people think wishing and wanting is going to make things happen, then they are mistaken and clearly weren’t paying attention. As the old saying goes: “If wishes were horses, beggars would ride.”

    It is definitely not a good thing for people to believe that thought make things happen, just like it is not a good thing for people coming into our business to think it’s easy and anyone can do it. Thoughts START the process, the emotion carries it, and then action brings it to fruition.

  • The Secret really is no secret. It is what has been known forever as positive thinking. They have taken these principals and collated them into a very clear message. If you have seen only the 15-minute trailer you need to see the whole hour and a half film to understand.

    The Secret very clearly states that in order to reap you must sow. What it also says is that as you affirm to your higher power or universe what your goal is that things will align so that your desire will happen, but not without action. It also says that it may not always be the means to the end that you had envisioned that will bring about your desire.

    I think the Genie and “your wish is my command,” is where people miss the boat. The point of the Genie is that a lot of people wish they would have less debt, wish they would lose weight ~ when they should envision a mental picture of getting checks in the mail or see themselves in an affirmation of doing the kinds of things they could do as a thin person. The point being that we have to paint a picture of what we want not what we want to get away from.

    All I can say is that to know the secret you need to see the message of the secret. Once you see it, may be you will say you already live it and that would be a wonderful thing. If you don’t know the secret none could deny, like anything new, there are things you will learn that will benefit your life.

  • The ideas in The Secret aren’t really new, just a slick rehash of lots of ideas that have been floating around since at least the 70’s when I was exposed to them for the first time.

    As a young woman who felt generally incapable and afraid to go for my dreams, this sort of thinking allowed me to feel less powerless, without requiring me to step outside my comfort zone. I even managed some modest successes as long as they didn’t require much of me. I didn’t know how to keep taking action to sustain success, or even that it was necessary.

    Whatever metaphysical truths might be trying to be expressed in The Secret, I find the thinking there so fuzzy that any good in it for me gets quickly co-opted by my fears, lack of confidence, and predilection for inaction.

    The book that has really made a major difference in communicating the power of the unconscious without giving me permission repeatedly disappoint myself and abandon my dreams is The DaVinci Method by Garret LoPorto. I highly recommend it.

  • One of the other statements in The Secret is “Energy flows where attention goes: — and attention means aligning your thoughts, emotions, energy, AND ACTIONS with your goal.

    The Secret is to gently but fervently turn our thoughts and feelings towards positive outcomes and gently but firmly override the fears and doubts of our worried souls. Not fake it til you make it as much as believe it til you achieve it.

    My personal 🙂 theory is that we all use The Secret naturally and unwittingly in areas of our life where we are pretty comfortable, capable, and confident. On the other hand, we are more challenged to apply it in areas where we have limiting beliefs.

    When I was six years old I told my Mom I loved waking up early because “Every day when I wake up I think, ‘Something WONDERFUL is going to happen today’!” And guess what? Yup, I got exactly what I expected. Pollyanna? You bet, but it worked, effortlessly.

    On a grander scale, we all know people who became what they knew, deep in their core from day one, they would become. Not the only road to success, but we’d probably take it over the “Yikes, I hope I don’t fail” demons that plague most of us.

    Is The Secret magic? No. Does it create miracles? Yes. Because what do we have to lose by adopting this belief in abundance and then working it with glee? Nuttin, Honey. Sure beats stoically soldiering through the “reality” of tough times.

    I LIKE The Secret, so I’m asking, believing, acting, and receiving like crazy. What fun! (Now THERE’s a worthy goal.)

  • The movie, “The Secret” is an encouragement to focus (think and feel) on what one wants vs. what one doesn’t want. It is pretty much the same message from the beginning.

    From before Christian scripture and after, up to the present time it has always been about getting the inside (thinking and feeling) going in the wanted direction so the outside (actions) can be quicker, easier and more enjoyable.

    It is about getting the thinking, feeling and actions all working together to get what is wanted. It is like what Kim teaches on Networking only for everything.

    Unfortunately, this last explanation of the Universal Laws and the one movie puts forth LOA may not set well with Christians as it comes from a NY bestseller “The Law of Attraction, The Basics of The Teachings of Abraham”, by Jerry and Ester Hicks.

    Even though it is in line with the deeper Christian Life most Christians after reading the book or listening to the tapes from Abraham-Hicks will go in another direction and yet it can make one get off their hiney’s and take action.

    Law of Attraction is about inspiration over motivation.

    Motivation is the ‘push yourself until you get what you want, hard-work ethic’ that was mentioned. It works and we all know it. But is it the best or the only way?

    Inspiration is knowing what you want so clearly (because you’ve focused on it and thought it out before hand) that the actions you take are inspired (meaning you feel like doing them, and are happy as you go about your business).

    To use the young man who asked his dad if he could believe his way to passing a test, for instance. Yes, you could (technically) but only if he believedit, (the rub) and who believes that? Nobody! Or almost nobody;-)

    What could he do then to use LOA to help?

    Before he sat down to study/review, he could imagine himself smiling as he received his paper back with an A+ on it. He could take it further and imagine telling his parents and how good that feels – or whatever. Then as he studied, LOA would cause him to focus most on the material that the test will cover.

    Action is required, but unpleasant action is not. Still, you need to learn how it works in order to use it deliberately. I say deliberately because LOA is at work in your life whether you know about it or not. Once you understand it, and apply it on purpose, it gives you complete control over your life experience.

  • I think what Napoleon Hill says in “Think and Grow Rich” applies here…There are two parts to the secret and you can only unlock it if you already possess the first part.
    Those who think they just have to sit around and wait for good things to come to them obviously don’t have the first part!

  • Every garden starts with a a seed that is planted and watered. If you do not plant you can not have anything growing in your garden. That is the same with life. Millions do not drop into your lap because you willed it there. It is because you planted the seed to make something grow. A business has to watered and worked to get the weeds out. Where your mind is… is what your body follows. If you think of nothing.. nothing happened. If you think about how broke you are … you remain broke. If you think about how you can make your business grow and work it… it will become more. Maybe not a million dollar business but it will grow.

  • The Secret doesn’t promote inactivity any more than the Bible does! It’s the principles from the Bible that cause “the secret” to work and many people I have shared that with have seen the same thing. The “guard your heart with all diligence for out of it flow the issues of life”, “While the earth remains, Seedtime and harvest, Cold and heat, Winter and summer, And day and night Shall not cease.”, “as a man thinks in his heart, so is he” and “And he said, So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground; And should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring and grow up, he knoweth not how. For the earth bringeth forth fruit of herself; first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear. But when the fruit is brought forth, immediately he putteth in the sickle, because the harvest is come. And he said, Whereunto shall we liken the kingdom of God? or with what comparison shall we compare it? It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when it is sown in the earth, is less than all the seeds that be in the earth: But when it is sown, it groweth up, and becometh greater than all herbs, and shooteth out great branches; so that the fowls of the air may lodge under the shadow of it. And with many such parables spake he the word unto them, as they were able to hear it. But without a parable spake he not unto them: and when they were alone, he expounded all things to his disciples.” The Secret is like a modern-day parable that we who have “ears to hear” can use to show how God’s principles even prosper those who do not believe as we do, so how much more should it work for us? “And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light. And I say unto you, Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness…” The “religious” people of that day criticized Jesus for the company he kept too, so why should it be any different today for us? We will always have the poor with us because there will always be people who “do nothing” and wallow in the victim mentality. “He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.”” The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.” “The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: but the slothful shall be under tribute.””The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness; but of every one that is hasty only to want.” So that about covers it for the “Get Rich Quick” crowd doesn’t it? And finally, Thomas Alva Edison – “Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work. It is astonishing how many have difficulty in putting their brains definitely and systematically to work.” We are to work with our focus on where we are going with a thankful heart and not despise the day of small beginnings because we will reap if we do not faint or grow weary in well doing!   • My views on the Secret –

    (1) The proposed science behind the Secret is mumbo-jumbo. In the real world, opposites attract. (Oops for the Law of Attraction!) And, no, quantum mechanics does not say our thoughts radiate out to the universe.

    (2) The Secret clearly implies that your mental focus alone will bring things to you. An example from the movie was the boy wanting the bike, cutting out the picture, focusing his thoughts on the bike, and having it show up as a gift from his grandfather. (No action required, just mental focus, i.e., “Thoughts become things” or “Ask, Believe, Receive”)

    (3) Who do you think will be more successful? (a) A person who focuses on their wish board for an hour a day, or (b) a person who prospects for an hour a day?

    (4) To those who say the movie clearly indicates action is required I say, “That’s not much of a ‘secret’ anymore, is it? Everyone already knows that you have to work towards your goals to get them.”

    (5) Why would a group of network marketers produce the Secret, if it encourages people to do nothing? At least it keeps them from dropping out, thereby having their autoship remain active. (Yikes, that’s cynical!)

  • I watched “The Secret” on the recommendation of a friend and found it powerful and emotionally moving. For me, it was a very visual presentation of the ideas taught in “Think and Grow Rich”. There is one statement in the film that could drive a lot of evangelicals away if they take it in the wrong context, but it’s going to depend on how they view their place in the universe. I would categorically state that the film does _not_ contravene Christian belief but rather enhances and strengthens it. The more I put the law of attraction to work in my life, the more it pays me. I would recommend the film to anyone.

    I watched the Secret and the Oprah episodes, I don’t recall anything about doing “nothing”, or getting that impression at all.
    What I got out of it is this:
    You visualize what you want your life to look like, and then you ACT and take daily steps to make that visualization come true.

  • Here is some information that may add clarification to whether or not the Secret teaches people to do nothing. This is taken from the book version of The Secret (pp. 45-57):

    How to use the Secret —

    Step 1: Ask — “You get to choose what you want, but you must be clear about what you want. . . . If you’re not clear, then the law of attraction cannot bring you what you want.”

    Step 2: Believe — “You must believe that you have received. You must know that what you want is yours the moment you ask. . . If you had placed an order from a catalogue you would relax, know you are going to receive what you ordered, and get on with your life. In the moment you ask, and believe and know you already have it in the unseen, the entire Universe shifts to bring it into the seen. . . . When you do that, the law of attraction will powerfully move all circumstances, people, and events, for you to receive. . . . How it will happen, how the Universe will bring it to you, is not your concern or job. Allow the Universe to do it for you. . . . You think you have to do it and you do not believe the Universe will do it for you.” (emphasis in original)

    Step 3: Receive — “Ask once, believe you have received, and all you have to do to receive is feel good. . . . Action will sometimes be required . . . . All you require is You, and your ability to think things into being.”

  • It is very clear to me in the movie that they indicated you have to put actions behind your thoughts. I have watched it about 4 or more times though, but I got it the fist time I watched it. I took notes too, so that I would get the basic outline of the success principles discussed. “Dreaming” about something will not make it come to fruition, it is our actions that follow that will get us closer to our goals.

  • I have not seen The Secret. But my experience is that in order for the Law of Attraction to create anything, you must be ENROLLING. This is being in such a way (attractive and in relationship!) that opens up possibilities for people that causes them to take *action*. Sometimes just being out there vibrant, warm and caring will cause people to approach you. Other times you need to engage people. Either way, you’re DOING something, and asking open ended questions.

  • What the “Secret” conveys is that once your “wish” is out there, the answer you get from the universe (as a Christian I prefer to say God) is usually an opportunity. You still have to recognize that the opportunity has arrived, be willing to seize it, and then, work to make the opportunity pay off.

    It specifically states that in the section of the movie where they are playing volleyball.

    If you have yet to see The Secret, buy it. If you wish to watch it you can now rent it through Netflix if you have an account. I highly suggest purchasing it. I have watched it atleast 5 times and have learned something new each time.

  • I guess what is good to remember is that we all learn differently and that paradigm shifts are an evolutionary process.

    Take the example of paradigms in any science — they influence the very questions we’re able to ask. It isn’t until ‘after the shift’ that we’re able to say “Oh, ofcourse … NOW I see” and ask new questions.

    For myself, I can kind of understand the impression that watching “The Secret” can lead to people stopping dead in their tracks … ’cause I’m sure it does!

    My take on it is that it’s much like a locomotive changing direction, even though ‘reverse’ is intended, it can take some time to get going in the new direction AND there may even be a period of ‘full stop’ in the middle there.

    The trick, as others have noted, is to get into and stay ‘in action’ even when it seems as though very little movement/progress is being made. Inertia can work for us or against us, right?

    Keep the faith — “Thoughts DO become things” , just be really clear that we do also “Get more of what we focus on” 🙂

  • My mentor told me about The Secret last September, when I felt that I was in a doldrum in my business; her zeal was such that I ordered it immediately and watched it the next day when it arrived.
    I believe that the Secret could have been designed purposefully for people in our industry; it is amazingly uplifting, moving and inspiring – just a complete success! I have applied the Secret into my business and my life – there are some interesting results!
    Does it promote ‘doing nothing’? I do not believe so; I think it is a catalyst to make one do more and at the same time you are ‘intending’ things to happen alongside your business!
    For example, when I talk to people I mentally intend that this will be a great call or meeting – so that happens!
    I’ve watched the ‘Bleep’ film and have found it ‘deep’; my hat is off to anyone who is really into it and understands it fully. The next one when you go down the Rabbithole is supposed to be even more incredible! Interestingly, the quantum physicists on the ‘Bleep’ are also on the Secret.
    I would urge anyone in our Industry to immerse themselves in the Secret – our business group here in the UK is having dramatic results from doing so.

    You know, that is a great point and that can be the cause of some people not doing anything for a while. After watching The Secret your mind tends to shift in thoughts about things that you DO want. Those things may not be what you have now. It may not be the business that you are currently in, especially those companies that do not allow marketing online. Might that be one reason that some people are not doing anything? Because they are evaluating their current situation?

  • Kim, the secret specifically speaks about thoughts, feelings and actions. It is important to understand the intricate relationship of the three. I find it interesting how it has moved through the ages.. how I was exposed to it many years ago in quantum physics not fully grasping the power I had in my mind. It is important to remember that everything in existence today started with a thought. Thanks for your continuing dialog.

  • I usually just read these posts but felt compelled to comment on this one. The Secret has some good material in it but it has all been said before. I encourage people to go read Think and Grow Rich or Psycho-Cybernetics, two books that changed my life. Unfortunately the Secret promotes new age religion and I see it as a way for them proclaim their religion to the masses. As a christian I cannot recommend the Secret in good conscience. You can tell yourself you’ll ignore those parts, but if it’s somehing you plan to watch over and over again, its like anything (sex or violence on TV) soon it’s accepted.
    The books I mentioned earlier did change my life. My vision was to retire in my 40s – I did. My vision is to have a wonderful life – and I am. I am always amazed at the problems people are having that I meet, when I feel so blessed to have a wonderful family, enough to live on, and the time freedom so many of us desire. I do believe As a Man Thinkth works. Have the vision, then let the subconscious prompt you to take action. And then take action.
    P.S. If someone’s not taking action, move on and find someone else. Are you working on your vision or theirs?

  • They specifically say in “The Secret” that you have to take ACTION. I don’t believe anyone listening or watching could get the impression that you just sit around and wait without doing anything. I think those types of people will think that no matter what someone actually says, they are just interested in the part that says you can attract anything you want into your life, they stop listening or paying attention after that. I found “The Secret” to be very powerful and seeing the Law of Attraction at work in my own life is very exciting!

  • Thought, feeling and behavior

    In the realm of Social Psychology, studies focus on the interrelationship of thoughts, feeling and behaviors and what affects each of these components of humanness.

    The studies have generally found that if you change one of the components [be it thought, feeling or behavior] the others change to be in alignment. Part of the reason is what is known as “cognitive dissonance.” We as humans feel uncomfortable when we have a discrepancy between any two of those parts of “us” – i.e. between thought and behavior or between feeling and thought, etc.
    So we work to get the three components back into alignment.

    The Secret tends to focus on the thought and feeling aspect of viewers. It works on the psychological idea that if you change your thoughts or feelings you will change your behavior.

    I’m not up on my neuropsychologiy these years ☺ but I recall there was research on brain waves, specifically alpha and theta waves, which shows the relationship of these brain waves to learning efficiency and maybe how we integrate sensory information and behavioral output.

    So when watching videos like The Secret, meditating or chanting, you are most likely activating certain brain waves. And this, in turn, helps organize your brain and motor aspects – and then “aha” – your “thinking” has worked to change your “action.”

  • I think Walter is spot on. It’s hard to take The Secret (pp. 45-57) out of context. It’s just a little creepy. People can add to it all they want when they say it promotes you to do action. Well, you didn’t get that from the book or movie. You put some common sense in place and took action. Don’t be fooled by this Universal cosmic energy stuff. Sounds like the beginning of another cult to me. The Secret is just another Science fiction novel. Maybe it should come with a free copy of Dianetics by L. Ron Hubbard

  • I believe it is the Law of Attraction that brought me to Kim Klaver’s teachings. I have been studying the LOA for about 6 months and my daily outlook on life has blossomed. I smile a lot more, thinking about what the future holds for me.

    A very inspirational book about the different “Laws” governing our lives is Raymond Holliwell’s “Working With The Law.”

    The following quote is one of my favorites, and I believe it portrays, in part, what the Law of Attraction is about:

    “Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative and creation, there is one elementary truth the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents, meetings and material assistance which no man could have dreamed would have come his way.   • Fantastic comments. I’m really enjoying the attention The Secret is getting. You know I don’t care how law of attraction is being seen by the mainstream, its getting out there and getting seen, its starting to affect people for the better.

    I always wonder how that can be a negative thing. I see some comments really remind me of my father who said I was too much a dreamer (I am) but heck I’d rather be dreaming about what I want to create vs sitting with what I’ve been stuck with.

    I see law of attraction as being an entry into an amazing life. Look earth life is about contrast, there will always be the ups and downs, law of attraction just helps with dealing with LIFE. The more you tune into what you want vs what you don’t want (think of your usual day, reading the newspapers full of drama, watching TV full of drama, sadness, heartache, bombs!!) which takes practice (does get automatic) you start to find life flows easier. Now you naysayers who say its hoo haaa why would you want to decline to have a better, easier life at the end of the day? Why do you so desire to have a life full of difficulty?

    Do I have ‘difficult’ days? Yes but my perception has changed and I don’t see things the same way. I attract more powerful and amazing situations, opportunities, people, experiences. Its not just wish on a star and you’ll win a million, its the journey that you travel with Law of Attraction that starts to create a whole new world, synchronicities open up, life flows more, the issues you once had no longer are a problem.

    What does it take to get there? Desire for feeling good, letting go of the BS ‘out there’, focus, reading and surrounding yourself with uplifting empowering books, videos, people; shedding anything that doesn’t feel good like people (psychic vampires), negators, anyone who wants to crush your dreams etc.

    I think most people in Network Marketing are already way on track with this because they are willing to move out of their comfort zone and look for something more in life, something that will make life much easier and effortless at the end of the day. Sadly, most people out there live the limiting beliefs most of us have been brought up with (life was meant to be hard, rich people are evil and its noble to be poor!).

  • Warning about The Secret!

    The Secret is an infomercial based on positive thinking controlling your destiny, also called ‘The Law of Attraction’ or the power of words. It would only be a useful motivational tool if someone on your team has a tendency to think, feel or speak negatively. By all means, it is good to encourage people to be genuinely positive.

    However, be careful not to feed someone else’s cash cow. In your pursuit of personal growth and development you will find many products and many speakers whose aim is to hook into your network. Many people make a great income selling motivational products to the thousands in network marketing, but they are not all good! Be discerning. Judge a product on its merits and assess where it fits into your portfolio of tools.

    The makers of The Secret have taken age-old wisdom and wrapped it in New Age philosophy. It contains seeds of truth in a dramatic and enticing movie/documentary format.

    I do NOT recommend it to people on my team. We’re in the business of training business people in an ever-discerning world. The Secret smacks of all the hype we’re trying to avoid.

    It is true that we create our own world beginning with our thoughts. Thoughts become words and words become actions. We design and alter our environment with our speech. “Life and death are in the power of the tongue.” With this tool we can build up or tear down, uplift or discourage, give life or destroy it.

    It is also true that our internal realities become our external realities, i.e., what is ruling on the inside of us affects the outside. Changing the external [i.e., focussing on merely changing our words] without dealing with the heart will bind you up and burn you out. “Watch over the heart with all diligence, for from it flows the issues of life.” Properly dealing with attitudes, ambitions and agendas is a key that guarantees success in other areas of life.

    The secret is we succeed “on purpose”. Maintain your passion for your product. If its in you and its genuine, it can be released through you and reproduced.

  • I was NOT crazy about this particular medium for the age-old message that we co-create our reality. It may well be an eye opener for people who have never heard of the Law of Attraction.

    But quite frankly I fell asleep watching it, after being irritated by the hype. My first reaction was that this was too much like an MLM meeting. It had all the factors that I did not like about
    “What the Bleep”, minus the things that I did like about the Bleep.
    Not much in the way of interesting visuals, mostly talking heads. But the heads keep changing every half minute, as if they are afraid no one can maintain focus on one face
    for longer than that. I’d rather read Lynn Grabhorn, or listen to Wayne Dyer, Esther Hicks, or Mike Dooley explain the same thing.
    All of the above have inspired me.
    And I really, really need to start doing more creative visualization, with feeling!

    But, to answer the question, I did NOT come away with the idea that no
    action was required to meet my goals, As St Benedict said much earlier, Ora et Labora. Pray and work.

  • I’ve read the secret twice now and refer to it often. I believe that we are all influenced by the law of attraction. However, in order to manifest the thoughts you visualize you have to take action. Negative as well as positive thoughts can be a self fulfilling prophesy,this has been proven in studies with school children.We have to believe in ourselves and know that there is a higher being in charge. For those people that read this book and wished for good to come their way probably wouldn’t have taken the necessary actions anyway.
