Like movie directing, marketing is an experiment. No one knows for sure the outcome of any method. So we, like movie directors, learn the how-to’s that have worked for others, and use them as inspiration for our own creative adventure.
Anyone up for directing their own marketing movie?[/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]

How’s that any different for us?”
This is all good advice to give anyone who is learning something new. And indeed, why is that not taught to people starting out in MLM?
When 82% of the people joining MLM are women, why are network marketing companies still hiring male sales directors and teaching the same high pressure techniques?
One redeeming factor is that we do have a choice. From Kim’s post:
“Learning what is known is not meant to be a cookbook. It’s meant for you to open up for you, your own priceless intuition.”
OK, the heavy hitters know that they get checks more often that not. They are usually outgoing, personable, likable so people are willing to listen to them and follow their lead.
But what’s happening is activity is being equated with success. When the reality is, there is unwanted activity too, at the other end where people step away from the business end, and disappear in disgust, or if we’re lucky, become customers only.
This “activity equals success” attitude permeates our culture. We Americans have trouble just *being* because we think if we’re caught doing that, we’ll look lazy. (among other things)
But all of the great successes in our culture know that action is not the answer, or at least not the only answer. Yes there are those who have “failed their way to success” as was posted in another thread on this blog, but it isn’t the only way.
And we women and enlightened men are actually paving the way for this *new* (although ancient) way of being in the world of business, and life in general. Thanks, Kim for being courageous enough to follow your intuition, for the benefit of everyone who connects with your messages, and feels their intuition to listen closely, kick-in.
Be well,
Tracy
PS Kim, thanks for the great call last night!
I love this blog. We all are interested in the “easy button”. Network Marketing doesn’t sound or look hard, but it does take effort and skill development. It also takes a strong desire and committment, just like any business venture.

“People who claim they can assure you success are not to be trusted.”
Doesn’t this sound like so many people pitching NM products and business ops?
“This product is the miracle cure for blah blah blah.”
Or
“If you join me and and buy into my proven (expensive)duplication method, your business will explode!”
No product works for everyone (“Maybe this will work for you the way it did for me.”)
No business is for everyone – especially something involving sales, which requires leadership, charm and a certain something not everyone has. Also, there’s not just one way to do it. We all have to take advantage of our strong suits and unique positioning(ie. being a doctor or other health and wellness expert).
We’re all unique individuals. Nothing is truly duplicatable.
Just a few initial thoughts,

I like the closing question:
“Anyone up for directing their own marketing movie?”
For centuries, men and women have built ideas upon what was laid before them. Twisting and tweaking those ideas until the outcome generated the ideal result.
We don’t necessarily have to reinvent the wheel so to speak, we just have to step into new comfort zones. The hard part is finding what resonates with us and what will keep us engaged without discouragement to set us back and impede our progress.
We all love Kim! Kim, we love you! Why because she is a realist that makes it FUN! I believe were all attracted to this industry because we want to have more fun in our own lives with those we love, go to more fun places, buy more fun things, have more fun times. That take more money. Everyone loves to laugh and have a good time! It’s the joy of life!
Kim simply makes the “journey” FUN! A trusted advisor, a trusted friend. She’s been there done that, essentially sharing her realistic views and experience of “this is ok” “this is not”.
So when Kim puts out the words:
“Anyone up for marketing their own movie?”
I say “You Bet!” I’ve got Kim!
Success and Joy!

I think many of us are/were waiting for that “magic” word, speech, program, you-name-it that would propel us and our business to glorious financial success. Why?
Because for years all we heard was “duplicatable.” We needed to do the exact same things as everyone else – even if it did not fit us or our own personalities.
We listened to some tell us how to give the “right” presentation – and if we felt awkward with the words, we were told that we were bound to be failures. [I had someone tell me that when I said, on a call, that “his” words were nothing I could ever say to people.] There is/was no room for individuality – it was to be his way or the highway – and his way included a very expensive coaching program of course ☺ to help me use his words…oh ugh…
But I live and learn and do it my way…
like Frank Sinatra sang…
Yes, there were times, I’m sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew
But through it all, when there was doubt
I ate it up and spit it out
I faced it all and I stood tall and did it my way
or as Shakespeare wrote….
This above all: to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.
We are our own life’s movie producers and directors and we also write our own scripts…thus we can make all the editorial changes needed for our own success – and do it our way!

A great weakness of the Network Marketing industry, as a whole, is the overwhelming majority of their practitioners who love hype and exagerated claims and promises.
The people fall prey to their chants believing (or wanting to believe) that there’s a magical wand or two o three magical words that will make all the work for them.
It’s probably an old cliche but nonetheless true: Network Marketing is NetWORK not NetREST 🙂

I struggled with the high pressure, big promises approach for years. I knew it didn’t feel like me, but I actually felt guilty for not wanting to follow the lead of my upline. After all, who was I to say this isn’t the way to do it when most of the people (mostly men) who were making big money were doing it that way.
So what happened? Finally, I wasn’t making any money either because I kept making excuses for why I couldn’t make the calls and say those things that didn’t feel comfortable for me.
Now, I’m rebuilding and my passion is to help people not to fall into the trap that I fell into.
I can’t tell you how much money I’ve wasted over the years on the wrong types of advertising because I was trying to follow someone else’s routine and because I felt so uncomfortable that I invented any excuse not to do the follow-up, even on the leads I got.
My mission now, is to help others not to waste money following the wrong paths and to help newbies not get caught in the hype. One thing we must do is teach confidence in the industry as it should be, the company we’ve chosen and the products we market so that our babies don’t feel that they have to resort to hype and lies.
I believe we must teach and train in such a way that years from now, we will be happy to be face to face with the people we’ve taught and not feel that we owe them any apologies.
We will never be perfect, but we can be honest, caring and professional in our actions.

Kim-
Thanks for bringing the rest of the story to the light. Just like Judy and many others, I wondered what was wrong with me. Did I get into the business too late? Do I live in the wrong area for this product? I have been very successful and entrepreneurial in my JOB, seeing the big picture, successfully recruiting, providing excellent training. I know I can do this. I did it before in Tupperware. I made manager back in the days of territories and not being able to have team members outside my geographical area. My team grew as I had fun. I had a product I believed in and loved.
What is the problem now?
I love my products. People who try my products love them too. The hypey methods I was been asked to do felt foreign to me. I want to see growth, but it has been very slow. I have felt like a fish out of water and I, like Judy, made (and make) excuses for not making calls and saying those things that don’t feel right for me. I also have had huge difficulty doing the follow-up on the leads I got>
Enter Kim Klaver and ultimately NMC! I have found training I can understand and that resonates with me, my beliefs and my style. I’m not a lone ranger. I can work this way. Through NMC, I have an amazing call buddy. We have been working together for more than a month. She found me through my profile—she said she felt we had things in common (family, working mom, etc.) She is from a different company and lives in a completely different time zone, but we have shared our path together. She has taught me a lot, modeled what I would have expected from my upline, given me a chance to try the tools Kim has promoted. I continue to work to develop a team based on the kind of support I believe is necessary for long term sustainability. Hopefully she has gained from our association as well.
This is the way I want to grow my business. It is not a fast hot flash in the pan, but it is a system I can live with, just like I have products I can promote and believe in—placing them next to anyone else’s with confidence. I had to find Kim for myself and I wish it had been sooner, but this is obviously the right time. I think I can execute, explain, and extend the methods to my newbies.

Thanks Kim for showing us that there are many ways to build a business. One size fits all systems-duplication is like painting everyone with the same brush. Respect the individual and help them succeed where they are and with their strengths. I wonder how many people quit because they couldn’t fit the mold that was being promoted by their team leaders.
My upline and I are so different in abilities and talents and I am setting my own course on the path to success.
We need to honor ourselves as well as others. We don’t want someone trying to change us and we shouldn’t be trying to change them.
