Today is spiritual day.
If you had 6 minutes to make your business opportunity “ptich” what would you say?
Mr. Rogers (see video here) went to the U.S. Senate, talked for 6 minutes, and got $20 million dollars.
Here’s what Mr. Rogers said…
The video opens…
“Alright Rogers, you got the floor,” drawls Senator John Pastore
1. Mr. Rogers responded gently, speaking slowly and quietly about trust. You can almost hear a pin drop on the video here. (This beginning was not like the usual pitch the Senators heard when promoters came asking for money – big hype and promises if funded – nor the usual forecasts of gloom and doom if the requested funding were not approved.)
2. He told about his pre-existing interest and activity. His first attempt at a children’s program started 15 years before. Budget $30.
3. He used a comparison everyone understood to show how little his kind of TV programming was receiving in funding. Mr. Rogers told the senators that the budget for the entire season of his daily half hour program was less than what it cost to pay for the animation for just two minutes of cartoons – “animated bombardment” as he called it. (Cartoons were running constantly on TV then, many of them violent, so that comparison make it instantly obvious how little his program was getting compared to what was being spent on cartoons.)
4. He asked if he could demonstrate what the program was about by reading the lyrics to a little song he and the children had created together . He said it was to show how “We don’t have to bop someone over the head to create drama on the screen…”
The Senator said yes, he’d really like to hear, and Mr. Rogers told him:
Then he recited…
“What do you do with the mad that you feel?” [fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”yes” overflow=”visible”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][line came straight from a child, said Mr. R.]
When you feel so mad you could bite…
When the whole wide world feels oh so wrong!
And nothing you do seems very right? What do you do?
Do you punch a bag?
Do you pound some clay or some dough?
Do you round up friends for a game of tag?
Or see how fast you go?It’s great to be able to stop
When you’ve planned a thing that’s wrong
And be able to do something else instead
And think this song.I can stop when I want to
Can stop when I wish
Can stop stop stop anytime
And what a good feeling to feel like this! And know that the feeling is really mine
Know that there’s something deep inside
That helps us become what we can
For a girl can be someday a lady
And a boy can be someday a man.
The Senator sighed with a gesture that said, “How can we NOT approve this?” and told Mr. Rogers that he’d just gotten his $20 million dollars.
“Our kind of communication,” Mr. Rogers told the Senators, was one program in a TV world full of violence-driven drama that was NOT driven by bopping others over the head. And he said it was “for those who would watch that.” Millions did. Not all, but millions.
What about a community of network marketers within the larger NM world, that is not driven by bopping others over the head with screaming hype or promise-driven promotions?
“Our kind of communication” would be based on our own stories and interests, validated by third party sources of information that are not themselves selling anything.
Would more and different people buy from us if we approached them this new kind of communication?[/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]

Let me just say that watching this was very touching to me. I didn’t realize how important that message was. I am now wondering if I can get some of his shows for my little girl to watch now. He really did make a HUGE impact and he was my tv friend. You are right, the communication style is very important even in this very important meeting.
I am so proud to be a part of this New School community and so happy to have stumbled upon it several months ago. Prior to that, all the links I would click on offering help with my network marketing business were actually offering hype. Lots of testosterone-driven ways to approach people that just did not suit my style.
I had kind of given up on team trainings and I am reinstating them now, with the goal of training them according to a mixture of our company manual and Kim’s New School techniques.
At our next scheduled meeting, I will introduce them to the reaching out methods, tell them which ones I like and encourage them to experiment with 3-5 that appeal to them.
I can’t wait to experience our collective business and personal growth in the next 100 days!
Thanks Kim…you’re a gem!

Yes, the kind of communication we utilize is very important. “Selling” people just doesn’t work.
People must come to believe we are there to help them and then if we have the right product at the right time, they will listen.
His was of true concern.
We should all have the same concern.
I was committed before Kim of your teaching. Now make that double.
Thank You!

Thank you for sharing that video. It reminded me of how important it is to rein my passion in to a slower pace and share slowly from my heart.

Wow, I am a 60 year grandfather and remember clearly that this was the way my maternal grandfather used to talk with us, his grand children.
Always in a calm, peaceful, yet encouraging way. When he spoke, we listened. What he had to say was important and we always listened, even if it was sometimes a rebuke, we listened and learned.
I try to use the same gentleness of speech with my own grand daughters and it seems to bring out the best in them.
So, thanks for Mr Rogers and men like him, who understand that leading by example really does mean … leading by example.
And yes, I agree; meet children where they are, tell them you like them just the way they are and stress that their very presence has made a positive difference in your day.
Thank you Kim, for bringing Mr Rogers to my laptop.
That was a true gift. Thank you Kim.

If you had 6 minutes to make your business opportunity “pitch” what would you say?
Well, I prefer not to pitch (wink) and I do know what you mean by the question, Kim! Just ribbing ya!
What I would say would truly depend on how the conversation started, and what point we are at in it.
Sometimes, even when I call people back who fill out a form and request to know more off of my website, they will say – “So, pitch me on your deal!” Or, “What’s your spiel?”
I am always quick to let them know that it is not my desire to pitch them or give them any “spiel.” What I would like to do is find out more about them, what it was that prompted them to contact me and request to know more, and then answer any questions that I can.
I go a little further and let them know that I won’t be trying to “sell them” into my program. I am only interested in them “selling themselves” because that is what ultimately creates a win-win between us as partners.
That goes a long way in reassuring them and it really opens the conversation up for solid communication. They feel comfortable asking me questions and I don’t have anything canned that I am going to say back.
People are always looking for “What’s in it for me” and that is easy to sum up in 6 minutes or less if you know what the person is looking to accomplish in the first place.
Questions first, then determine how what you are offering can fill the need.
EXPECT Success!
