My old friend Dr. Julie designed a highly concentrated health supplement about 18 months ago. Except for herself and a gaggle of friends taking it, she’s been busy doing other things and hasn’t done any marketing. She doesn’t like marketing, actually.
Anyway, about 2 months ago, she felt the need to get some high powered sales types involved in the business, and asked me if I’d help get it going. I take and love this particular supplement. And, I own a piece of this tiny, three-person start-up.
I’ve been busy with iGaggle (coming very soon), NMC, my blog, New School CDs, and MP3s and an upcoming gig, so I haven’t done much…yet. She’s mentioned it nevertheless each time we talk.
Well, about ten days ago, Dr. Julie went on a special spiritual retreat. She drove to the place with another gal who was going (who almost didn’t go because she’d just lost her job). The two of them and some others shared an apartment for the week.
Dr. Julie comes back two nights ago, came over and introduced me to the gal with whom she’d gone.
“Hey Kim,” she says, “I’d like you to meet someone who’s decided to rep our product line full time because she loves it.”
(!!)
Turns out the gal was a 20-year direct sales veteran with a life-long interest in nutrition, and background in pharmacueticals. She was between sales jobs. She’d even done a few network marketing deals.
It happened that at this retreat, she had noticed Dr. Julie’s product in their shared walk-in closet. She asked Dr. J about it, tried it, had stunning results, and decided she wanted to be the principal rep in the MidWest.
She signed up and tonight, laid out her plans to do the sales necessary to hit the top commission spot in the next 4-6 weeks. With her large network and a full time effort (she has some unemployment to keep her alive) she’s out of the gate.
No matter how this turns out, there’s a most interesting lesson here:
The recruiting process is totally different when someone just perfect for it is seeking what you have, and you are there, ready.
Dr. Julie was ready. She walks the talk, lives the health nut life, and can and does help anyone who asks her how to get back on a healthy track. She always has product with her, because she’s never without it.
When the rep is ready, the recruit appears.
A walk-in closet.

I think this is a great blog. “When the rep is ready, the recruit appears”
Sometimes we try too hard to sell those who don’t share the same vision and belief in the product as we do.
When we find someone who is just as interested in achieving what we want, it becomes an easy and natural partnership.

I’m glad you didn’t say, “She saw the product in the garage!” 🙂

The closet, go figure.
I was talking to another NMer and discussing how to grow the business. We both agreed we would rather have reps join us that want to do the business than convince them that they do.
I’ll be leaving my closet doors open so more people can see.

Well, this is certainly the law of attraction at work!
Imagine, almost not going because she lost her job, then finding the perfect fit.
How fortuitous for all!
It reminds me of a few weeks ago while staying with my mom, she suggested her visiting nurse might be interested in one of my health products.
I never would have approached her, but she was looking for a new sideline with her partner, so she took samples and they loved them.
If only it could always be so easy! They say when you aren’t looking is when it happens…so it’s okay to take a step back in our pursuits and let nature take its course in our “down” time.
