"This product killed my husband of 43 years."

No, it’s not a health supplement marketed by a network marketing company.

“Merck will pay $4.85 billion to settle thousands of lawsuits in one of the largest civil cases ever, the company said Friday.

Merck faced about 26,600 lawsuits representing 47,000 plaintiffs, plus about 265 potential class action cases, filed by people or family members who claimed the drug (Vioxx) proved fatal or injured its users. The agreement is to cover cases filed in federal and state courts…” (emphasis added – KK) More here.

Vioxx: a quick fix to those daily aches and pains. Could be fatal. Approved by the FDA.

For my money, I’d rather exercise some each day, eat better and add some high end supplements to my daily diet. It’s not quick, but it’s worked for me for 35 years.

P.S. One of the many plaintiffs in the Vioxx case was reported to have made the title statement.

Unfortunately, in my experience, people would rather go for the quick fix. They don’t realize what they are setting themselves up for long term.

People take better care of their cars than they do themselves.

I believe the problem is that pharmaceutical companies are very powerful and seem to have great influence over doctors; and most patients do whatever their doctors say rather than conduct their own due diligence.

I encourage my prospects to talk to their doctors but also explore other options and then make their own decision.

I’m with Kim, I would rather be proactive and take care of myself now and hopefully avoid drugs later.

  • I worked a booth at a hospital health fair recently. One of the doctors I talked to said he doesn’t take vitamins because they are not approved by the FDA. I wonder how many times he prescribed Vioxx to his patients?

  • Drug companies get away with it all the time. They have enough money to pay the lawsuits so they don’t care.

You see commercials with a list of side effects longer than my grocery list and I have three teenagers and two adults in the house.

If our products had that many side effects we would be really in deep doo doo.

  • Marti and Lorraine,

When putting your website in the box at the bottom of the comment space, always include the http:// in front of it. The easiest way to do that is to go (in a different tab or window) to the site you want your name to be linked to. Highlight the address at the top of your browser and copy it. Then come back here and paste it in. That way you know you have the correct, complete address so when people click on your name it goes where it’s supposed to go.

    Have a great day!!

  • This is just amazing….

Isn’t the job of the FDA to protect us from such stuff?

Why in the world would do we allow the FDA to approve such stuff. Viox is not the only one…. but then again alcohol and tabacco are legal too – but they have their own agency to control them…..

  • It is so important these days to do your own research about health. Read all you can. Use your own common sense. People rely far to much on the FDA and their own MDs. MDs act like things have been actually proven and are gospel when in fact, they haven’t even been fully tested. Estrogen anyone? 10 years ago, my MD told me I HAD to take it for at least a decade, to save my bones, heart, face, etc. I never took a single pill. The alternative medical community was already sceptical about hormone replacement long before the Womens Health Study. I couldn’t find one herbalist or naturopath in all my reading that recommended it. And, that is what I went with, because MDs seemed incapably of any other point of view, and it did not ring true with me.

  • Ask your doctor … what should I eat. Most doctors have no clue where nutrition is concerned. Of those I’ve asked they’ve told me that nutrition is not taught in medical school. They are taught to recognize symptoms and treat those symptoms with drugs. One doctor friend of mine said there’s no ‘research’ to back up the fact that supplements can prevent disease.

Kathleen said, “MDs act like things have actually been proven and are gospel …” I think it’s more like they’re getting huge ‘kickbacks’ from the pharmaceutical industry so they WANT people sick. Think about it. If they recommend supplements and their patients are well, there goes their income. I know doctors who take supplements, give them to their families yet won’t recommend them to their patients.

Who is Lulu going to trust? The MD with all the credentials hanging on his wall or Venetta who sells supplements?

    Venetta
I’d rather go dancing than to the doctor.

and watch the 40-min video by Dr. Laibow, sign up for her newsletter and see how the fight progresses in Congress, and for heaven’s sake do what you can to tell your friends and relatives to WAKE UP BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE!!! Pay attention to how Congress votes, and insist your presidential candidate addresses the situation BEFORE you vote for him/her.

If we don’t take a stand now as citizens, none of us who care and practice a no-drugs approach to health issues will be able to do anything but talk about it among ourselves. One things for sure, as far as I’m concerned, fear of being honest with their doctor will drive people away from them.

  • We shouldn’t forget, the drug companies save tens of thousands of lives every year.

All of us know people who would be dead if it weren’t for medications.

In the late 60s and early 70s, the FDA took many years to approve beta-blocker medication. These medications, once on the market, saved the lives of about 10,000 people a year.

That means, for every year the FDA held it up in approval, 10,000 people needlessly died.

    Hmmmmm . . .
